Week Twenty: Wacky 80s - Culture Club - "Karma Chameleon" - Colour By Numbers

Up until I heard this song when I was six-years-old, I had only witnessed two other people play the harmonica – my grandfather and my dad. Even as a young child, I found the harmonica to be an awkward kind of instrument because when I tried to play it, it always seemed to involve a lot of spit, and it's difficult not to be compelled to flap one's elbows up and down like chicken wings when playing.

So you can completely understand my shock and surprise when I heard a harmonica being played loudly and clearly in this song on the radio. You can even more completely understand my shock and surprise when I saw the image of the individual who sang this song on MTV – Boy George.

Wow! Boy George was like nothing I had ever seen before!  He was pretty... and I wanted to be all colorful and odd just like him, but as a young Catholic school student who was being brainwashed into wanting to join a nunnery, I felt so utterly sinful by being mesmerized by such a character... therefore, I jumped on the bandwagon and declared him to be a weirdo, just like everyone else at the time was doing.

"Karma Chameleon" is probably one of the first tunes I ever heard from this band, but it is not my favorite Culture Club song.  That honor goes to... "Time (Clock of the Heart)" included below the lyrics.

There's a loving in your eyes all the way.
If I listened to your lies would you say
I'm a man (a man) without conviction,
I'm a man (a man) who doesn't know
How to sell (to sell) a contradiction.
You come and go, you come and go.

Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon,
You come and go, you come and go.
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams,
Red gold and green, red gold and green.

Didn't hear your wicked words every day
And you used to be so sweet, I heard you say
That my love (my love) was an addiction.
When we cling (we cling) our love is strong.
When you go (you go) you're gone forever.
You string along, you string along.

Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon,
You come and go, you come and go.
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams,
Red gold and green, red gold and green.

Every day is like survival (sur-vi-val),
You're my lover (you're my lover), not my rival.
Every day is like survival (sur-vi-val),
You're my lover (you're my lover), not my rival.

Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon,
You come and go, you come and go.
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams,
Red gold and green, red gold and green.

Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon,
You come and go, you come and go.
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams,
Red gold and green, red gold and green.
