Week Nineteen: Empire Records - The The - "This is the Day" - Empire Records Soundtrack

+++++++Spoiler Alert+++++++

I will be revealing what happens throughout the course of the film as I am simultaneously speaking about the soundtrack; so you might want to go watch it before reading these posts...

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that this movie has a happy ending.  To quickly wrap it up for you... A.J. exacts revenge on Rex Manning for being such a douche-nozzle. Then Corey stages a funeral for Debra so that she can see what it might be like if she committed suicide.  Warren comes back with a gun loaded with blanks and says he's going to shoot the place up.  While the news media is covering the whole debacle, Mark comes up with a brilliant idea to host a party at the store to get the money back that Lucas gambled and lost in Atlantic City... and somehow they all end up dancing on the roof top to this song.

Here's a bit of trivia for all of you non-Smiths fans... Johnny Marr of The Smiths' fame played guitar in The The for a period of time.  This particular tune was pre-Johnny Marr days, but it's still a super-sweet appropriately-placed movie-ending type song.

I've included the original video for this song below the lyrics because as someone on youtube commented, it seriously has the best accordion solos... ever!!

Well... you didn't wake up this morning
Because you didn't go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes
Turn red
The calendar, on your wall, is ticking the days off
You've been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you've changed
All the money in the world
Couldn't buy back those days.
You pull back the curtains, and the sun burns into your eyes,
You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky.
THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.
THIS IS THE DAY -- When things fall into place.
You could've done anything -- if you'd wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky.
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with the memories
That hold your life together like
Glue
