Week Twenty-Four: First Concert Ever - The Bangles - "If She Knew What She Wants" - Different Light

Week Twenty-Four marks the 24th anniversary of the first concert that I ever attended on October 14, 1988, at Texas Stadium in Irving, TX - The Bangles & George Michael -

When I was growing up, my parents were always incredibly generous when it came to birthday gifts.  So for my 11th birthday, when I heard on Y95 (94.9 on the dial) that George Michael & The Bangles were coming to Irving, TX, I knew that what I wanted more than anything was to go to my first concert ever.

The whole process was so exhilarating!!!  I remember using the speed redial on the cordless phone to call into Ticketmaster, and I remember my 10-and-a-half-year-old heart racing and my hands trembling when it finally started ringing.  I remember giving them my parents' American Express information and then waiting for the tickets to arrive in the mail.  Then I remember admiring the tickets for weeks as I patiently waited for October 14, 1988, to finally arrive.  My dad got to be the lucky candidate to take me to this life-altering event.

My dad wasn't particularly excited about seeing George Michael because long before George Michael ever "came out" to the world, my dad advised me that George Michael had "sugar in his shoes," which is just his polite way of calling someone homosexual.  I wasn't convinced.  I was way too in love with George Michael at the time to believe it.

My dad was pretty stoked about seeing The Bangles, though, because c'mon, they're all super-cute!!!  I was a huge fan of The Bangles, and my friends and I would always select their songs to sing at the recording studio that they used to have at Town East Mall. Remember the recording studio?!?!?  You would select a song, and they would give you a lyric sheet.  You would slap on the headphones and go into a studio room with microphones and walk away with your very own rendition of the hottest tunes... man, those were awesomely fun times!!!

I think my friends and I had recordings of us singing almost every single song by The Bangles, but this was one of my favorites!!!

And, in an effort to credit the original artist, since this is a cover, I have included the Jules Shear version below the lyrics...

If she knew what she wants
(He'd be giving it to her)
If she knew what she needs
(He could give her that too)
If she knew what she wants
(But he can't see through her)
If she knew what she wants
He'd be giving it to her
Giving it to her

But she wants everything
(He can pretend to give her everything)
Or there's nothing she wants
(She don't want to sort it out)
He's crazy for this girl
(But she don't know what she's looking for)
If she knew what she wants
He'd be giving it to her
Giving it to her

I'd say her values are corrupted
But she's open to change
Then one day she's satisfied
And the next I'll find her crying
And it's nothing she can explain

If she knew what she wants
(He'd be giving it to her)
If she knew what she needs
(He could give her that too)
If she knew what she wants
(But he can't see through her)
If she knew what she wants
He'd be giving it to her
Giving it to her

Some have a style
That they work hard to refine
So they walk a crooked line
But she won't understand
Why anyone would have to try
To walk a line when they could fly

No sense thinking I could rehabilitate her
When she's fine, fine, fine
She's got so many ideas traveling around in her head
She doesn't need nothing from mine

If she knew what she wants
(He'd be giving it to her)
If she knew what she needs
(He could give her that too)
If she knew what she wants
(But he can't see through her)
If she knew what she wants
He'd be giving it to her
Giving it to her

But she wants everything
(He can pretend to give her everything)
Or there's nothing she wants
(She don't want to sort it out)
He's crazy for this girl
(But she don't know what she's looking for)
If she knew what she wants
He'd be giving it to her
Giving it to her

(He'd be giving it to her)
(He could give her that too)
(But he can't see through her)
He'd be giving it to her
Giving it to her
