I first heard this song in 1988, when my parents finally purchased a VCR, and we started frequenting the video store. One of the first films I rented was Can't Buy Me Love. This began my obsession with going to high school, with Patrick Dempsey (before he got that stupid moniker – Dr. “Whatever”), and with Volkswagen convertibles. Since this song is played so faintly in the background of an important party scene in the film, it didn't really stick with me much. I definitely thought it was an awesome song at the time though.
However, when I began attending an 80s night at the Art Bar in the Club Clearview complex in Deep Ellum, the DJ reintroduced me to this tune with a fierceness. No, it did not renew my obsession with this film, with going to high school, with Patrick Dempsey, or with Volkswagen convertibles, but it did renew my obsession with this song!
