Week Fourteen will be dedicated to the most awesomely awesome mixed-tape that I ever received from someone with a Y-chromosome (that would be a male, for all of you who slept through science class - shame on you!!!)
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Immediately after Soft Cell, there was another song before "Disco 2000". I think it might have been a NIN song, but I can't quite remember. Sadly, the tape was lost when I made my many moves around Denton, Lewisville, and Carrollton while I was in college; so I cannot confirm. I do know that there were five songs on each side, and "Disco 2000" ended side one. I suppose that Song Four/Side One will forever remain a mystery.
Regardless, I was all too familiar with Pulp. My second dorm roommate, Jenny, was a huge Pulp fan. She had a mixed-tape in her car that she listened to incessantly. On this mixed-tape was "Common People". She had even choreographed a dance that included slapping the steering wheel, dashboard, and ceiling to the beat. It was obviously done for shock value, and anyone riding down I-35 with her going 75mph, while simultaneously doing this dance, knew that she got exactly what she was after --- drivers staring at her in shock with gaping mouths.
I had heard "Disco 2000" (although nowhere near the number of times that I heard "Common People) and thought it was a sweet little tune about unrequited love. In fact, I read in one of my music magazines, a few years after receiving this tape, that this is actually a true-ish story based on the life of Jarvis Cocker.
So I had made it through Side One of the most awesomely awesome mixed-tape that I ever received from someone with a Y-chromosome, and it was just a matter of a flip of the cassette to see what awaited me on Side Two...
Well we were born within one hour of each other.
Our mothers said we could be sister and brother.
Your name is Deborah, Deborah.
It never suited ya.
(They said that) when we grew up,
we'd get married, and never split up.
We never dated, although often I thought of it.
Oh Deborah, do you recall?
Your house was very small,
with wood chip on the wall.
When I came around to call,
you didn't notice me at all.
I said let's all meet up in the year 2000.
Won't it be strange when we're all fully grown.
Be there two o'clock by the fountain down the road.
I never knew that you'd get married.
I would be living down here on my own
On that damp and lonely Thursday years ago.
You were the first girl at school to get breasts.
Martyn said that yours were the best.
The boys all loved you but I was a mess.
I had to watch them trying to get you undressed.
We were friends but that was as far as it went.
I used to walk you home sometimes but it meant,
oh it meant nothing to you,
cos you were so popular.
Deborah do you recall?
Your house was very small,
with woodchip on the wall.
When I came around to call,
you didn't notice me at all.

on that damp and lonely Thursday years ago.
Oh yeah,
oh yeah.
And now it's all over,
You've paid your money and you've taken your choice
And I don't know if we'll ever meet again
But Deborah I just wanted you to know
I remember every single thing
Oh Deborah, do you recall?
Your house was very small,
with wood chip on the wall.

Oh what are you doing Sunday baby.
Would you like to come and meet me maybe?
You can even bring your baby.
Ohhh ooh ooh. Ooh ooh ooh ooh.
What are you doing Sunday baby.
Would you like to come and meet me maybe?
You can even bring your baby.
Ooh ooh oh. Ooh ooh ooh ooh. Ooh ooh ooh ooh. Oh.
