Week Fifteen: XENON Mix - EMF - "Unbelievable" - Schubert Dip

Week Fifteen belongs to the most wickedly cool teen club that opened in Dallas in the early 90s - XENON

***UPDATE*** 10/16/2012

More fun club-related treats found their way into my inbox recently.  These are VIP cards from XENON and the clubs that came before it, including Metropolis & Level V.  I was just entering the club scene when XENON came around so I was never cool enough to actually possess one of these cards.  However, I was discussing fashions of the "in crowd" from the early 90s with the individual who sent me this photo.

I realized that many of the club patrons dressed similarly to a few of the guys in EMF, which is why I chose this post to add the photo update.  We collectively determined that the fashion of the time definitely included the grunge/skater look for guys with items like anything Vision Street Wear, anything Stussy, anything Girbaud, and black leather motorcycle jackets.  For the ladies, the fashion centered around garters or colored tights under short (and often ripped) jean shorts, as well as band t-shirts, flannels, and Docs.  It was not unheard of to see the ladies sporting the Sinead O'Connor look either!!

EMF popped up in my world around the same time that Jesus Jones did.  Their song, "Unbelievable", was played all over the radio and at XENON.  EMF was a band that just looked insanely cool, and their cassette, Schubert Dip, was one of the few that I owned at the time that I could listen to all the way through without hitting the fast forward button.

My friend, Brandy (from yesterday's post), was convinced that she was going to marry the lead singer of EMF and that I was going to marry the lead singer of Jesus Jones and that we were going to be one big happy 90s Britpop family.

Sadly, when EMF did get around to touring Dallas, they stopped at a venue that was 18 & up.  I did get to hear a radio interview with them while they were in town and some small sound clips of the live show, as well, but I was heartbroken that my age was keeping me from being in attendance.

I was so distraught that my mother even offered to drive me to the venue to see if they would let me in if she was there with me as my legal guardian.  At that time, I did not want to be caught at an EMF show with my mother, but now I wish I would have at least let her try.  Boy, those were awful growing pains, but I soon after turned goth and forgot all about my lads in EMF & Jesus Jones; however, I love it when they come back to visit me on my iPod!

"Unbelievable" was in no way, shape, or form my favorite EMF song.  It was just the one that was played at XENON.  Therefore, I am also including a clip of "Admit It" below, which does happen to be my favorite, because I'm not sure if I'll get a chance to speak more of EMF in later posts.

Oh!
What the f**k...

What the f**k was that?

You burden me with your questions
You'd have me tell no lies.
You're always askin' what it's all about,
don't listen to my replies.
You say to me I don't talk enough,
But when I do I'm a fool.
These times I've spent, I've realized,
I'm gonna shoot through, and leave you.

Chorus:
The things, you say,
Your purple prose just gives you away.
The things, you say,
You're unbelievable.

Oh!
What the f**k...

What the f**k was that?

You burden me with your problems,
By telling me more bout mine.
I'm always so concerned,
With the way you say,
you're always at stop,
To think of us,
being one is more than I'd ever known.
But this time I realize,
I'm gonna shoot through, and leave you.

Chorus:
The things, you say,
Your purple prose just gives you away.
The things, you say,
You're unbelievable.

Oh!
What the f**k...
Good point...
What the f**k...
Good point...
What the f**k...
Good point...
What the f**k was that?

Seemingly lastless, don't mean you can ask us.
Pushing down the relative
Bringing out your higher self
Think of the fine times
Pushing down the better few
Instead of bringing out just want, the world,
and never think of your attitude.
Brace yourself, with the grace of ease,
I know this world, ain't what it seems!

What the f**k was that?
It's unbelievable.

You burden me with your questions
You'd have me tell no lies.
You're always askin' what it's all about,
don't listen to my replies.
You say to me I don't talk enough,
But when I do I'm a fool.
These times I've spent, I've realized,
I'm gonna shoot through, and leave you.

Chorus:
The things, you say,
Your purple prose just gives you away.
The things, you say,
Before I love you more.
The things, you say,
Your purple prose just gives you away.
The things, you say,
You're unbelievable.

Oh!
What the f**k...
Good point...
What the f**k...
You're so unbelievable.

Good point...
What the f**k...
Good point...
What the f**k...
You're unbelievable.

It's unbelievable.
Whoa....
What the f**k...
Good point...
What the f**k...
Good point...
What the f**k...
What the f**k was that?
You're unbelievable.
