Week Twelve: Amy Winehouse - "Cupid" - Back to Black: B-Sides
When I write about covers, I always do my best to credit the original artist, which in this case is Sam Cooke. Sam Cooke was an amazing talent with a phenomenal voice, and I truly wish that he had an opportunity to hear Amy's version of this tune because I think it would have made him proud.
My contract law professor was a huge Sam Cooke fan, and he told us a funny story about how he would joke with his wife and tell her that when he died, he wanted to go only in his sports coat and shoes, just like Sam Cooke, minus the bullet. She would respond something along the lines of: "If you don't watch it, you're gonna get nothing but the bullet!"
I love the reggae beats that Rhythms Del Mundo used on this track, and Amy's voice is spot on. I have this tune on my MP3 player in my truck, and every time it comes on, I am so tempted to roll down the windows and blast it for all the surrounding vehicles to enjoy! However, I generally don't because in my neighborhood, I'd have to compete with monster bass blasters anyhow, and my Ford Ranger speakers don't quite measure up.
Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow flow
Straight to my lover's heart for me
Nobody but me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover's heart for me
I don't want to bother you, but I'm in distress
There's danger of me losing all of my happiness
For I love a man who doesn't know I exist
And this you can fix so
Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow flow
Straight to my lover's heart for me
Nobody but me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover's heart for me
Now if your arrow makes his love strong for me
I swear I'm gonna love him until eternity
I know that 'tween the both of us, his heart we can steal
