Week Nine: The Psychedelic Furs - "Pretty in Pink" - Greatest Hits

Well now, it would seem that The Psychedelic Furs are just full of the ability to inspire.  Not only did they inspire the name of my fancy little blog here, but their song, "Pretty in Pink" was the inspiration for the title of one of my favorite movies of all time!!

If you have not seen the film, Pretty in Pink, it would be the understatement of the century to say that you are truly missing out!  You must familiarize yourself with Andie, Duckie, Blane, Iona, and even the repulsive, Steff.  Then while you are at it, do yourself an even bigger favor and watch the rest of the John Hughes' masterpieces, as well!!

When it comes to this song, most fans of The Furs know that there are actually multiple versions.  The original version was released in 1981 on their album, Talk Talk Talk.  Then, when the film was released in 1986, The Furs also released a more radio-friendly version of the tune.  I am more partial to the original version because it is the one I hear more often on the Greatest Hits CD that I frequently listen to, but I am not opposed to listening to the film version either.  I am including a youtube clip for both for your listening pleasure... enjoy!!

Caroline laughs and it's raining all day
and she loves to be one of the girls
she lives in the place in the side of our lives
where nothing is ever put straight
she turns herself round and she smiles and she says,
"This is it, that's the end of the joke."
and loses herself in her dreaming and sleep and her lovers walk through in their coats
she's

pretty in pink
isn't she
pretty in pink
isn't she

All of her loves all talk of the notes
and the flowers that they never sent
and wasn't she easy?
and isn't she pretty in pink?
the one to insist he was first in the line is the last to remember her name
he's walking around in this dress she once wore
she is gone but the joke's the same

pretty in pink
isn't she
pretty in pink
isn't she

Caroline talks to you softly sometimes
she says, "I love you," and "too much."
she doesn't have anything you want to steal well
nothing you can touch
she waves
she buttons your shirt
the traffic is waiting outside
she hands you this coat
she gives you her clothes
these cars collide

pretty in pink
isn't she
pretty in pink
isn't she

Caroline's on the table screaming
confidence is in the sea
all her favorite rags are worn and other kinds of uniform
they kid you you're really free
a case of individuality
you know what you want to be
until tomorrow
and everything you are
you see
in pure shiny buttons
doorbell sings it chimes it plays
anything goes
bells toll in rhyme
