Week Twenty-Nine: Jane's Addiction - "Classic Girl" - Ritual de lo Habitual

Week Twenty-Nine marks the fifteenth anniversary of my first, and only, time to see Jane's Addiction in concert at the Fair Park Coliseum on November 18, 1997 - sorry it's so difficult to see the ticket stub; it faded like crazy... I am also going throw in some Porno for Pyros this week since that was one of Perry's other noble efforts:

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

I first discovered Jane's Addiction with the birth of Lollapalooza in 1991. I did not get to attend the very first Lollapalooza because tickets sold out before I could acquire one; however, this event began my fascination with Perry Farrell and Casey Niccoli.

I typically seem to have a difficult time with the concept of love. I was even told by one boyfriend that I do not have a romantic bone in my entire body. Whatever --- I just consider myself to be well-grounded, and I do not buy into the mass media depiction of love. What it really came down to was that he was a bit "girlier" than I was - another story for another day.

The easiest way I can understand love is on a spectrum of whether or not a person irritates me. If you do not irritate me, I love you the most. The more you irritate me, the farther down the love spectrum you move... I'm totally kidding, but wouldn't it be awesome if it were that simple?!?!?!

Regardless, when I saw the film, Gift, from where the scenes for this video were pulled, I was convinced that Perry and Casey had discovered real love in one another. See, I told you that my concept of love was completely skewed... because I would learn later that theirs was a co-dependent relationship, fueled by a love of heroin, not a love of one another.

I vowed that if I were to ever wed, I would have a Santerian ceremony reminiscent of theirs --- ummmmm, minus the cutting and exchange of blood. I was crushed when I discovered that Perry and Casey were no more, and I was of the belief that if they could not make it, then no one would be able to make it.

I was also mortified that Perry claimed that the wedding was for filming purposes only, and I was equally mortified when Casey sued Perry for palimony, under California law, as a result of the time they spent as a couple and of the input that she provided for the band. It just all seemed so wrong!

I will always cherish my memories of the good and happy times that I perceived between Perry and Casey, and I will always believe that their wedding was real, despite what Perry claims --- see, I'm romantic, so there!!!

Also, someone posted Gift on youtube in Seven parts.  I still have my copy on VHS that I purchased at none other than Bills Records & Tapes.  I'll post Part One for you below the lyrics, and you can locate the other Six --- I will warn you, though, that it is a very trippy film.

4:05;
In my neighborhood,
When shots go off,
No one bothers.
A POP, and a reply POP, and no reply...
Dinosaurs on the quilt I wore
With a girl.
Such a classic girl...
Such a classic girl...
Such a classic girl,
Gives her man great ideas.
Hears you tell your friends,
Hey man, listen to my great idea!
It's true I am a villain
When you fall ill,
that's probably because
Men never can be.
Not like a girl.
A classic girl...
Such a classic girl...
They may say, Those were the days...,
But in a way,
You know for us these are the days.
Yes, for us these are the days,
And you know you're my girl!
Such a classic girl...
Such a classic girl...
Yeah for us these are the days...
