Week Twenty-Eight: New Romantic - Ultravox - "Reap the Wild Wind" - The Collection

From Wikipedia: New Romanticism (also called blitz kids and a variety of other names) was a pop culture movement in the United Kingdom that began around 1979 and peaked around 1981. Developing in London nightclubs such as Billy's and The Blitz and spreading to other major cities in the UK, it was based around flamboyant, eccentric fashion and New Wave music.

It would be silly to have New Romantic week without making mention of Ultravox, since they are a band that is synonymous with the New Romantic movement.

This is such a sweet little tune! I'm not sure what the true meaning is supposed to be, but to me, it's always been a "falling in love" type song. I think it's the part where he sings: "You take my hand and give me your friendship...I'll take my time and send you my slow reply..."

I wish I would take relationships a bit more slowly, as this song suggests. I always seem to dive right in, head first, with a big splash. Then after a few weeks, I start trying to back track a bit and slow things down, and the more I pull back, the more clingy boys seem to get... then it inevitably ends up in an emotional mess that has to be cleaned up in order to proceed. The same story seems to unfold in front of my face time and time again, and I don't know how to make it stop.

Well, I suppose I do know how to make it stop - sloooooow things down from the start, but it's often easier said than done. One of these days, I'll figure it out. Until then, I have bands like Ultravox to instill hope in me.

Reap the wild wind. (Repeat 3 times)

A finger points to show a scene. (Take my hand. Take my hand.)
Another face where mine had been. (Take my hand. Take my hand.)
Another footstep where I once walked. (Take my hand)

Take it all.

Chorus:

You take my hand and give me your friendship.
I'll take my time and send you my slow reply.
Give me an inch and I'll make the best of it.
Take all you want and leave all the rest to die.

Reap the wild wind.

A footprint haunts an empty floor. (Take my hand. Take my hand.)
A fading coat that I once wore. (Take my hand. Take my hand.)
Oh, desolation where I once lived.
I have seen in times gone by.
I have felt a different shadow on the wall,
A stranglehold on a certain feeling.

(Chorus)

Reap the wild wind. (Repeat 2 times)

(Chorus)

Reap the wild wind.
