Week Five: Peter Murphy - "Cuts You Up" - Deep

So, as I mentioned, I had the pleasure of seeing Peter Murphy play live twice - the first time at a KDGE (94.5 The Edge) festival that he headlined in 1992 and the second time at Deep Ellum Live in 2000.

The magic was completely lost the first time I heard this song played live because we were at the Starplex Amphitheatre (or at least that was what it was called before it had its 100+ name changes).  We were up at the very top of the lawn against the wall, and much to my dismay, the unruly girl next to me was (*gasp*) yapping throughout the entire length of the song.  The only thing that kept me from punching her in the face for being so disrespectful was the fact that she was X'ing and was completely freaking out.

The second time I heard the song live was in a far more intimate setting.  Deep Ellum Live was still a good-sized venue, but it was nothing like Starplex.  It was also completely enclosed.

I had a habit of keeping both my ticket stub and the newspaper clipping from the review of the show.  So when I was verifying dates on the shows, I glanced over the newspaper clipping.  According to the DMN write-up, at this very 2000 show, Eric Avery (ex-Jane's Addiction) was on bass, Peter DiStefano (Porno for Pyros) was on guitar, and Kevin Haskins (ex-Bauhaus and current Love & Rockets) was on drums.

How in the hell did I miss that?  I suppose that I was just so mesmerized by Mr. Murphy.  He does have a very commanding appearance after all!!

I find you in the morning
After dreams of distant signs
You pour yourself over me
Like the sun through the blinds
You lift me up and get me out
Keep me walking but never shout
"Hold the secret close", I hear you say

You know the way it throws about.
It takes you in and spits you out
It spits you out when you desire
to conquer it, to feel you're higher
To follow it you must be clean,
with mistakes that you do mean
Move the heart, switch the pace
Look for what seems out of place

On and on it goes
Calling like a distant wind
Through the zero hour we'll walk
We'll cut the thick and break the thin
No sound to break, no moment clear
When all the doubts are crystal clear
Crashing hard into the secret wind

You know the way it twists and turns
Changing color, spinning yarns
You know the way it leaves you dry
It cuts you up, and takes you high
You know the way it's painted gold
Is it honey? Is it cold?
You know the way it throws about.
It takes you in and spits you out

Oh, cuts you up
Oh, cuts you up
Oh, cuts you up
La, la, la...

You know the way it throws about.
It takes you in and spits you out
It spits you out when you desire
to conquer it, to feel you're higher
To follow it you must be clean,
with mistakes that you do mean
Move the heart, switch the pace
Look for what seems out of place

Oh, cuts you up
Oh, cuts you up
It's okay it goes this way.
The line it twists, it twists away
Cuts you up and spits you out
Keeps you walking, but never shout
La la la...
