Week Thirty-Three: Echo & The Bunnymen - "Bring on the Dancing Horses" - Songs to Learn & Sing

This is another one of my favorites from Echo & The Bunnymen. I'm probably not telling most of you anything new when I mention that this song appears in the film, Pretty in Pink. According to the liner notes for Songs to Learn & Sing, it was specifically recorded for the film.

However, what you may not know is that what you hear in the film or on Songs to Learn & Sing is not the original version. If you are lucky enough to possess the Sire/Rhino 2003 reissue/compilation of Echo & The Bunnymen (which I do), then you own "Jimmy Brown" (track 12), which was a previously unissued early version of "Bring on the Dancing Horses". Fortunately, someone posted it to youtube, so I will be able to include both versions:

Here's the original version called "Jimmy Brown":

And here is the video, which is directed by Anton Corbijn --- you may remember him from the Front 242 - "Headhunter" video --- remember the eggs??? You'll probably also notice that many of the famous images that are closely associated with Echo & The Bunnymen are pulled from this video:

Jimmy Brown
Made of stone
Charlie Clown
No way home
Bring on the dancing horses
Headless and all alone

Shiver and say the words
Of every lie you've heard

First I'm gonna make it
Then I'm gonna break it
Till it falls apart
Hating all the faking
And shaking while I'm breaking
Your brittle heart

Billy stands
All alone
Sinking sand
Skin and bone
Bring on the dancing horses
Wherever they may roam

Shiver and say the words
Of every lie you've heard

First I'm gonna make it
Then I'm gonna break it
Till it falls apart
Hating all the faking
And shaking while I'm breaking
Your brittle heart

Brittle heart
Brittle heart
Brittle heart
And my little heart
Goes

Jimmy Brown
Made of stone
Charlie Clown
No way home

Bring on the headless horses
Wherever they may roam
Shiver and say the words
Of every lie you've heard

First I'm gonna make it
Then I'm gonna break it
Till it falls apart
Hating all the faking
And shaking while you're breaking
My brittle heart
Brittle heart
Brittle heart
And our little heart
Goes

Bring on the new messiah
Wherever he may roam
Bring on the new messiah
Wherever he may roam
Bring on the new messiah
Wherever he may roam
Bring on the new messiah
Wherever he may roam
