Week Sixty-Five: Pandora Picks - Chairlift - "Bruises" - Does You Inspire You

The songs that I have selected for this week were Pandora suggestions based on my She & Him station...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is another band that I know next to nothing about, so Wikipedia will have to fill you in on all the details:
"Chairlift formed initially as a project between Aaron Pfenning and Caroline Polachek at the University of Colorado in October 2005. The group intended to make background music for haunted houses. Along with bassist Kyle McCabe, Chairlift recorded the beginning of Daylight Savings EP at New Monkey Studio in Los Angeles, California in April 2006. Chairlift relocated to Williamsburg, Brooklyn in August 2006 and signed to Kanine Records in June 2007. Patrick Wimberly joined the group in early 2007. They released their first full-length album, Does You Inspire You, in 2008. The single 'Evident Utensil' was nominated for an award in the 'Breakthrough Video' category at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards."
"Their song 'Bruises' was featured in the 2008 commercial that launched the fourth-generation iPod Nano."
Speaking of bruises, I imagine Adam Ant might be nursing a few tender bruises after he took that nasty fall at the beginning of "Goody Two Shoes" on Sunday night at The Granada... Don't worry, Adam... You still put on a phenomenal show, and I adore you and your fancy dancing... and I would ice your bruisy knees!!! ;-)
I tried to do handstands for you
I tried to do headstands for you
Everytime I fell on you yeah everytime I fell
I tried to do handstands for you
But everytime I fell for you
I'm permanently black and blue, permanently blue for you
I tried to do handstands for you
I tried to do headstands for you
Everytime I fell on you yeah everytime I fell
I tried to do handstands but everytime I fell for you
I'm permanently black and blue, permanently blue for
You-ooo etc...
For you-ooo etc...
So black and blue-oooo etc...
For you-ooo etc...
I grabbed some frozen strawberries so I could ice your bruisy knees
But frozen things they all unfreeze and now I taste like
All those frozen strawberries I used to chill your bruisy knees,
Hot July ain't good to me
I'm pink and black and blue
I got bruises on my knees for you
And grass stains on my knees for you
Got holes in my new jeans for you
Got pink and black and blue
Got bruises on my knees for you
And grass stains on my knees for you
Got holes in my new jeans for you
Got pink and black and blue for
You-ooo etc...
For you-ooo etc....
So black and blue-ooo etc...
For you-oooo etc....
Week Sixty-Five: Pandora Picks - Rooney - "When Did Your Heart Go Missing?" - Calling the World
The songs that I have selected for this week were Pandora suggestions based on my She & Him station...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I actually heard this song on either VH-1 or MTV before I finally nixed my television watching for good, but I had completely forgotten about it until it reappeared on my Pandora station. I do recall seeing a very brief interview with the lead singer where he complained about the difficulty of gaining credibility as a band simply because he is part of the Coppola (as in Francis Ford and Sofia) family throne. Speaking of the Coppolas, if you read my post from yesterday, I mentioned The Outsiders, which Francis Ford Coppola directed and in which Sofia had a very tiny role.

I know very little about Rooney, but after consulting Wikipedia, I discovered some interesting facts about the band and the band name:

"Rooney is an American rock band from Los Angeles. It is self-produced and used to be signed to Geffen Records. The band is now composed of Robert Schwartzman (lead vocals, guitar), Louie Stephens (keyboards, piano), Taylor Locke (lead guitar, backing vocals), Ned Brower (drums, backing vocals), and Brandon Schwartzel (bass guitar). The band is named after Ed Rooney, the principal in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Their music is reminiscent of British Invasion rock and 1980s pop, and has been compared to The Beatles, The Cars, Jellyfish, Sloan and Blur. They have toured the nation with acts such as the Weezer, The Strokes, Jane's Addiction, Travis, Keane, Audioslave, OK Go, and Queens of the Stone Age."

Love don't come so easily
This doesn't have to end in tragedy
I have you and you have me
We're one and a million why can't you see

I'm waitin', waitin' for nothing
You're leavin', leavin' me hanging
When did your heart go missing?
When did your heart go missing?
I treat you alike a princess
But your life is justa one big mess
When did your heart go missing?
When did your heart go missing?

Yeah

I meant every word I said
I never was lying when we talked in bed
I'm retracing every step in my head
What did i miss back that now is so, so misled? Oh

I'm waitin', waitin' for nothing
You're leavin', leavin' me hanging
When did your heart go missing?
When did your heart go missing?
I treat you alike a princess
But your life is justa one big mess
When did your heart go missing?
When did your heart go missing?

I don't understand
How could you forget
what we had?
Is so wrong

I'm waitin', waitin' for nothing
You're leavin', leavin' me hanging
When did your heart go missing?
When did your heart go missing?
I treat you alike a princess
But your life is justa one big mess
When did your heart go missing?
When did your heart go missing?
Yeah

Things were so good we had a little dream,
a little dream together, buy a house settle down, do our thing,
but you disappeared on me and your heart, your heart went missing and i don't how to find it,
i don't know where it is, I don't know where your heart went,
it was really just the other day now its gone,
I'm gonna call the police, call the in- investigator the heart investigator

When did your heart go missing? (background)
When did your heart go missing?

When did your heart go missing?
When did your heart go missing?

When did your heart go missing?

When did your heart go missing?

Week Sixty-Five: Pandora Picks - Peter Bjorn and John - "Young Folks" - Writer's Block

The songs that I have selected for this week were Pandora suggestions based on my She & Him station...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I seriously doubt that I am alone in my admission that I really like whistling songs; so when this little whistling ditty popped up on my Pandora station, I immediately gave it a thumbs up. I didn't know anything at all about this band, and that lead me to some Wiki research, where I found a fun fact about the band's name:
"Peter Bjorn and John (unofficially abbreviated as PB&J) are a Swedish Indie pop band, formed in Stockholm in 1999 and named after the first names of the band's members: Peter Morén (vocals, guitar and harmonica), Björn Yttling (bass guitar, keyboards and vocals) and John Eriksson..."
I'm not sure if I have already mentioned this, but the 8th grade novel that I taught (for nine years in a row) was The Outsiders, which I still, to this very day, absolutely adore!!! So how it ties into the band's name, or rather their unofficial abbreviation, is that when I would give my students their notes or quiz them or test them over the material, I would allow them to abbreviate any references to Ponyboy and Johnny as PB&J. They thought it was so clever and completely loved and over-used it!!!
Two other whistling tunes that I also really like are "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People and "5 Years Time" by Noah and the Whale, which are included below the lyrics...
If I told you things I did before, told you how I used to be
Would you go along with someone like me
If you knew my story word for word, had all of my history
Would you go along with someone like me
I did before and had my share, it didn't lead nowhere
I would go along with someone like you
It doesn't matter what you did, who you were hanging with
We could stick around and see this night through
And we don't care about the young folks
Talking 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talking 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about our own faults
Talking 'bout our own style
All we care about is talking
Talking only me and you
Usually when things has gone this far, people tend to disappear
No one will surprise me unless you do
I can tell there's something goin' on, hours seems to disappear
Everyone is leaving, I'm still with you
It doesn't matter what we do, where we are going to
We can stick around and see this night through
And we don't care about the young folks
Talking 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talking 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about our own faults
Talking 'bout our own style
All we care about is talking
Talking only me and you
And we don't care about the young folks
Talking 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talking 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about their own faults
Talking 'bout our own style
All we care about is talking
Talking only me and you
Talking only me and you
Talking only me and you
Talking only me and you
Week Sixty-Four: ??????? - Better Than Ezra - "Good" - Deluxe
I've been wanting to post about this week's songs for some time now, but I could never come up with a theme in order to include them. So this week, I am going theme-less, but I will offer you four really great random songs (and hopefully really great tales to accompany them)!!!
?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#
Better Than Ezra kind of fell into the same realm as Deep Blue Something for me. Back in 1995, if you recall from previous posts, I was super-uber-goth, and Better Than Ezra was anything but goth. So even though I really, really liked this song, I would have never admitted it to anyone at that time. So, again, my apologies to Better Than Ezra for not giving them the full-fledged support they deserved back in 1995. I will include another hit that I also really like called "Desperately Wanting"...
Looking around the house.
Hidden behind the window and the door.
Searching for signs of life but there's nobody home.
Well, maybe I'm just too sure.
Maybe I'm just too frightened
by the sound of it.
Pieces of note fall down, but the letter said,
[CHORUS:]
Aha, it was good living with you.
Aha, it was good.
Aha, it was good living with you.
Aha, it was good.
Sitting around the house,
watching the sun trace shadows on the floor.
Searching for signs of life, but there's nobody home.
Well, maybe I'll call
or write you a letter.
Now, maybe we'll see on the Fourth of July.
But I'm not too sure, and I'm not too proud.
Well, I'm not too sure and I'm not too proud to say.
[CHORUS:]
Aha, it was good living with you.
Aha, it was good.
Aha, it was good living with you.
Aha, it was good.
[spoken:]
Yeah, you were so good.yeah you were so good, yeah that's right...
Week Sixty-Four: ??????? - Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians - "So You Think You're in Love" - Perspex Island
I've been wanting to post about this week's songs for some time now, but I could never come up with a theme in order to include them. So this week, I am going theme-less, but I will offer you four really great random songs (and hopefully really great tales to accompany them)!!!
?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#
I know very little about Robyn Hitchcock, other than the fact that I like this song, as well as his song, "Beautiful Girl", which I will include below the lyrics. However, I will again resort to The Virgin Encyclopedia of 80s Music --- the best $30 investment that I ever made!!!
So you think you're in love
Yes, you probably are
But you wanna be straight about it
Oh, you wanna be straight about it now
So you think you're in love
Yes, you probably are
But you wanna be straight about it
Oh, you wanna be straight about it now
Can you imagine what the people say, can you?
But the silent majority
Is the crime of the century, you know it
Are you sure that it's wise?
No, you probably ain't
You don't wanna be faint about it
Oh, you shouldn't be faint about it now
By the look in your eyes
No, you probably ain't
But you shouldn't be faint about it
Oh, you gonna be faint about it now
What is love made of, nobody knows
What are you afraid of, everyone knows
It's love, it's love
So you think you're in love
Yes, you probably are
But you wanna be straight about it
Oh, you gotta be straight about it now
So you think you're in love
Yes, you probably are
But you wanna be straight about it
Oh, you gotta be straight about it now
So you think you're in love, yeah
Week Sixty-Four: ??????? - Billy Bragg - "Sexuality" - Don't Try This at Home
I've been wanting to post about this week's songs for some time now, but I could never come up with a theme in order to include them. So this week, I am going theme-less, but I will offer you four really great random songs (and hopefully really great tales to accompany them)!!!
?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#
I know that I mentioned this during Jesus Jones week, but I used to spend quite a bit of time at Six Flags Over Texas, as a result of purchasing a season pass. I've always wondered if anyone else remembered seeing this, but when you would go through that tunnel-type thing (the one that had all the different colored chewing gum and pennies stuck to the wall) as you were waiting in line for the Texas Giant, if you looked immediately to your right as you were entering, someone had written: "Sexuality - Billy Bragg". (Speaking of the Texas Giant... did you hear the recent news about the woman who fell off the ride and died?!?!? What a horrible way to go!!!)
For the longest time, I had no idea what that meant, but one day as I was browsing through the CD's at a local CD shop, I came across the name Billy Bragg... and there it was on Don't Try This at Home... "Sexuality". I purchased that CD without even knowing what the song sounded like, simply because curiosity had gotten the best of me.
It turned out to be a pleasant surprise because I really liked the song, and I discovered that Johnny Marr (of The Smiths) helped compose it. I saw in The Dallas Observer that Johnny Marr will be stopping by within the next few months. Additionally, Kirsty MacColl makes an appearance on this song.
I'll also throw in "A New England" by Billy Bragg, as well as "Walking Down Madison" by Kirsty MacColl.
I've had relations with girls from many nations
I've made passes at women of all classes
And just because you're gay I won't turn you away
If you stick around I'm sure that we can find some common ground
Chorus:
Sexuality - Strong and warm and wild and free
Sexuality - Your laws do not apply to me
A nuclear submarine sinks off the coast of Sweden
Headlines give me headaches when I read them
I had an uncle who once played for Red Star Belgrade
He said some things are really left best unspoken
But I prefer it all to be out in the open
Sexuality - Young and warm and wild and free
Sexuality - Your laws do not apply to me
Sexuality - Don't threaten me with misery
Sexuality - I demand equality
I'm sure that everybody knows how much my body hates me
It lets me down most every time and makes me rash and hasty
I feel a total jerk before your naked body of work
I'm getting weighed down with all this information
Safe sex doesn't mean no sex it just means use your imagination
Stop playing with yourselves in hard currency hotels
I look like Robert De Niro, I drive a Mitsubishi Zero
Sexuality - Strong and warm and wild and free
Sexuality - Your laws do not apply to me
Sexuality - Come eat and drink and sleep with me
Sexuality - We can be what we want to be
Week Sixty-Four: ??????? - Daisy Chainsaw - "Love Your Money" - Eleventeen
I've been wanting to post about this week's songs for some time now, but I could never come up with a theme in order to include them. So this week, I am going theme-less, but I will offer you four really great random songs (and hopefully really great tales to accompany them)!!!
?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#
So, I have been at my new job for a little over a month now, and I absolutely LOVE it!!! For starters, I'm pulling a 9 to 5 schedule, with a 30-minute lunch break, which, if you do the math, is not even an 8-hour day --- but I still get paid for a 40-hour week. The building I work in is the coolest ever!!! The doors open for you when you walk up to them, and one of the five elevators is open and waiting to take you up to your floor every morning. My boss is one of the kindest individuals I have ever met. He is very patient and even-tempered, and he brought us freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies one day --- it was the kind of chocolate chip cookie that deserved a glass of milk!!! Plus he has already sent me an email and a text to tell me what a great job I'm doing. Finally, my co-workers are really fun to work with, and as an added bonus, they are also very bright --- such a breath of fresh air!!!
For the most part, I am drafting documents for estate planning, which sounds a bit humdrum... but I'm here to tell you that it's not at all boring! Just imagine the drama that you experience in your own family, multiply that by ten, and then throw in greedy family members fighting over lots of money, and voila... you have estate planning!!!
Over the past few weeks, this Daisy Chainsaw song has popped into my head a time or two. However, I would take any of the issues that I deal with at this job any day over the nonsense I was dealing with as a junior high teacher!!!
And in case you were also wondering, my tap classes are super, as well. Since I'm in an intermediate class, we are working on three dances simultaneously, which is something a little new to me, but each one is equally enjoyable. I'll include the songs for our dances below because I'm not sure where I would work those in either.
Our primary dance is to Harry Connick Jr.'s version of "A Wink and a Smile". Then the other dances that we are working on a bit more slowly are to The Muppets' "Mahna Mahna" and Gotye's "Somebody that I Used to Know"...
We love you yeah
We love what you got and you've got it truly
You're talented kid
We can see it clearly
We love your sound
The way you look so we say sincerely
You're natural stars and we mean it really
{chorus}
We love your money(Love your money)
We love your money(Love your money)
We love your money(Love your money)
We love your money(Love your money)
Yes we do
We love you yeah
place your trust in us completely
You'll sell worldwide we mean it really
We love your songs
shape your image and we'll all be greedy
Sign right here, and we'll all be wealthy
{repeat}
We love you so love your demo
We love you so love love love love
all your money
We love your money(love your money)
We love your money(love your money)
Love love love love all your money
(repeat chorus)
Love love love love all your money
Love love love love all your money
Love love love love all your money
Week Sixty-Three: Rob Sheffield - Love is a Mix Tape - Teenage Fanclub - "God Knows It's True" - Deep Fried Fanclub
I love to read... no, I mean, I really, really love to read, especially during the scorching hot Texas summers, when stepping outside is enough to melt one's flesh right from the muscle and bone. My favorites are memoirs, biographies, and autobiographies, and it's even better when they incorporate music into the tales. A few years ago, I picked up a book called Love is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time by Rob Sheffield. If his name sounds familiar, it's probably because he wrote for Rolling Stone magazine, and I've also seen him on some of the VH-1 count down specials as one of the individuals who gave commentary. So, anyway, Rob starts each chapter with a mock cassette cover, and that is where I am drawing inspiration for this week's songs...
<3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3
I fell in love with Teenage Fanclub back in 1991, when I first heard their song, "The Concept", on 94.5 The EDGE. To me, there was something so sad about that song, but it didn't stop me from heading up to the mall and purchasing Bandwagonesque on cassette and listening to it over and over and over again (by hitting the rewind button, of course). I'll include the YouTube clip below the lyrics.
I didn't hear today's song, "God Knows It's True", until much, much later, even though it was actually released a year before "The Concept". However, it was released as an EP, and it was really hard to find. I had to wait until the release of Deep Fried Fanclub, which wasn't exactly easy to locate either, but I think I finally found that one at Bill's Records and Tapes because as I've said before: Bill never, ever let me down... ever!!!
I'll also include two of my other favorites by Teenage Fanclub called "What You Do to Me" and "Star Sign"...
Maybe I just got it wrong
Express the feelings in a song
I didn't mean that much to you
I'm given such a tainted view
I'm not bitter, you're still sweet
If I'm the bones, then you're the meat
I'd like to spend some time with you
Cause everything's got in a stew
God knows it's true, but I think that the devil knows it too.
God knows it's true, but I think that the devil knows it too.
God knows it's true, but I think that the devil knows it too.
God knows it's true, but I think that the devil knows it too.
Singing with a different band
Playing with a different hand
Somebody broke into my house
Stole the words out of my mouth
Baby said I've got it wrong
I sang the feelings in a song
And if they don't mean a thing to you
A lot you say is nothing new
God knows it's true, but I think that the devil knows it too.
God knows it's true, but I think that the devil knows it too.
God knows it's true, but I think that the devil knows it too.
God knows it's true, but I think that the devil knows it too.
Week Sixty-Three: Rob Sheffield - Love is a Mix Tape - The Style Council - "You're the Best Thing" - The Singular Adventures of The Style Council, Greatest Hits Vol. 1
I love to read... no, I mean, I really, really love to read, especially during the scorching hot Texas summers, when stepping outside is enough to melt one's flesh right from the muscle and bone. My favorites are memoirs, biographies, and autobiographies, and it's even better when they incorporate music into the tales. A few years ago, I picked up a book called Love is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time by Rob Sheffield. If his name sounds familiar, it's probably because he wrote for Rolling Stone magazine, and I've also seen him on some of the VH-1 count down specials as one of the individuals who gave commentary. So, anyway, Rob starts each chapter with a mock cassette cover, and that is where I am drawing inspiration for this week's songs...
<3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3
At the beginning of this year, when 102.1 The EDGE still let Jeff K have his Sunday morning retro show, he used to delight me with so many long-forgotten tunes. In fact, after I found out he was no longer on the air, I boycotted The EDGE, and now I only listen to 100.3 Jack FM and 91.7 KXT, as well as 98.7 KLUV. Jeff K was such a pivotal part of my musical development when I was growing up. It didn't matter if I was listening to The Flashback Cafe or EDGE Club, he was forever teaching me something about good music.
On one of his Sunday morning shows, he mentioned to the listeners that it was his anniversary and that he was going to dedicate a song to his wife. I listened with great anticipation to see just what tune he might select, and lo and behold, it turned out to be "You're the Best Thing" by The Style Council. Isn't that just the sweetest???
I'll also include another favorite by them called "My Ever Changing Moods"...
I could be discontent and chase the rainbows end
I might win much more but lose all that is mine
I could be a lot but I know I'm not
I'm content just with the riches that you bring
I might shoot to win and commit the sin
Of wanting more than I've already got
I could runaway but I'd rather stay
In the warmth of your smile lighting up my day
(the one that makes me say, heh)
'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me or my world
You're the best thing that ever happened - so don't go away
I might be a king and steal my peoples' things
But I don't go for that power crazy way
All that I could rule but I don't check for fools
All that I need is to be left to live my way
(say listen what I say)
I could chase around for nothing to be found
But why look for something that is never there
I may get it wrong sometimes but I'll come back in style
For I realise your love means more than anything
(the song you make me sing - yeah)
Also, I know I mentioned last week that I would be catching The P-Furs show tonight at House of Blues, but plans have changed for me. I would, however, like to welcome Richard Butler and the boys back to Dallas by including "Highwire Days" since that is what Rob selected for Love is a Mix Tape... I do already have my tickets for Adam Ant at The Granada Theater on July 28th, so maybe I'll run into you at that show instead. If you look closely at the mock cassette cover below, you'll also notice that he included "Friend or Foe" on this one!!!
Week Sixty-Three: Rob Sheffield - Love is a Mix Tape - M - "Pop Muzik" - Just Say Yesterday
I love to read... no, I mean, I really, really love to read, especially during the scorching hot Texas summers, when stepping outside is enough to melt one's flesh right from the muscle and bone. My favorites are memoirs, biographies, and autobiographies, and it's even better when they incorporate music into the tales. <3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3 / <3
I know that I have mentioned the compilation CD, Just Say Yesterday, on this blog when I talked about B-Movie's song, "Nowhere Girl", but that was before I really began including scans of the materials to which I was referring; so I will include a scan of it for you today because it was also where I first heard "Pop Muzik" by M - although, I owned the cassette of this compilation long before I ever converted to the CD:
Since I know precious little about the band, M, I am going to resort to The Virgin Encyclopedia of 80s Music to help me out with this one today:
I will also incorporate two more treats for you today! Since I probably won't ever get another opportunity to talk about "Kiss Me" by Tin Tin and since it is on the compilation CD, I will include that one. Also since I may never have another opportunity to mention Level 42 and since the band was referenced in the write-up, I am also including "Something About You" as well...
