Week One: She & Him - "Don't Look Back" - Volume Two

The first time I heard these lyrics, I was so confused.  The reason for this is because Zooey sings, "Orpheus melted the heart of Persephone...."  As a literature teacher, I actually cover the myth of "Orpheus & Eurydice" in my seventh grade class.  However, in the version we read, it's the heart of Hades that is affected.  Then I dug out some of the cobwebs in my old noggin and remembered that Persephone was the wife of Hades, after he kidnapped her as a result of being shot with an arrow of love by Eros.

It all made so much more sense, and I don't think that the name of Hades would lyrically fit well in that line anyways.  See, my dears, you never know when your seventh grade literature lessons will come in handy for interpreting modern day lyrics!

Orpheus melted the heart of Persephone, but I never had yours
I followed you back to the end of the path, but I never found the door

And you can work to save your love
You can bear it from the earth below

You can work but you can't let go
Oh, oh but you have to know

Don't look back all you'll ever get is the dust from the steps before
I don't have to see you every day, but I just want to know you're there

Quietly took to the dark of the day and the hiss of the summer night
The heat of the breeze was a cell block wall and when I looked you were out of sight

And you can work to save your love
You can bear it from the earth below

You can work but you can't let go
Oh, oh but you have to know

Don't look back all you'll ever get is the dust from the steps before
I don't have to see you every day, but I just want to know you're there

And you can work to save your love
You can bear it from the earth below

You can work but you can't let go
Oh, oh but you have to know

Don't look back all you'll ever get is the dust from the steps before
I don't have to see you every day, but I just want to know you're there

Don't look back all you'll ever get is the dust from the steps before
I don't have to see you every day, but I just want to know you're there

Don't look back all you'll ever get is the dust from the steps before
I don't have to see you every day, but I just want to know you're there

Don't look back all you'll ever get is the dust from the steps before
