Week Eighty-Four: Holiday Tunes - Part Deux - The Pogues Featuring Kirsty MacColl - "Fairytale of New York" - New Wave Xmas: Just Can't Get Enough

I am a huge fan of the Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the '80s compilation series, so when I heard that they were releasing a Christmas edition, I was giddy with anticipation at the thought of being able to add a copy of it to my collection. I will be the first to tell you, however, that it is not the greatest holiday compilation, and there are some seriously questionable choices on the CD. There are also some real treasures, and I'm going to use this week to share those with you:

In Week Sixty-Four, I shared with you a song/video by Kirsty MacColl, and how time flies... because just twenty weeks later, I am mentioning her again!!!

1st Wave on Sirius has been playing this one quite frequently, which is awesome, because until recently, I have never actually heard it played on the airwaves (or satellite waves???). I have to laugh every time one of the DJs introduces it though because it seems that they are unable to say the band name, The Pogues, without mentioning how bad their teeth are --- it doesn't matter which DJ is introducing the song either!!! ;-D

I fully agree that their teeth are somewhat frightening, but this is such a great song that I am willing to overlook this great hygienic flaw!

In fact, Wikipedia had the following information regarding this tune:

"It has been cited as the best Christmas song of all time in various television, radio and magazine related polls in the UK and Ireland."

The video is really fun to watch, as well, and it is done in black-and-white, which is my all-time favorite music video concept!!!

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare "Old Mountain Dew"
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in at eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So Happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging,
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day

You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last

The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you

The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells are ringing out
For Christmas Day
