Week Seventy: Mythology in Songs - Bananarama - "Venus" - True Confessions

Inspired by my trip to The Dallas Museum of Art this past Sunday to see The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece exhibit, for Week Seventy, I am going to offer you selections that have mythological references in the lyrics:

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

"Venus" was originally written and recorded by the band, Shocking Blue, but I like the Bananarama version better; so I will be covering that one instead.

The goddess, Venus, was the Roman representation of beauty, love, and sexuality. However, the Greeks and Romans hated one another; so it should be of no surprise that in the Greek versions of the mythological tales, the gods and goddesses frequently have different names. So don't be confused if you ever read that Aphrodite was the goddess of beauty, love, and sexuality... because she was... in the Greek versions of the tales.

I already covered a couple of Bananarama songs during Pocket Rockers Week, but I will also include "Cruel Summer" because Texas summers are always a bit cruel.

Goddess on a mountain top
Burning like a silver flame
Summit of beauty and love
And Venus was her name

(chorus)
She's got it
Yeah, baby, she's got it
I'm your Venus
I'm your fire
At your desire
Well, I'm your Venus
I'm your fire
At your desire

Her weapons were her crystal eyes
Making every man mad
Black as the dark night she was
Got what no-one else had
Wow !

(chorus)

Venus

(chorus)

Goddess on the mountain top
Burning like a silver flame
The summit of beauty and love
And Venus was her name
Wow !

(chorus)

Venus was her name

Yeah, baby, she's got it
(ad lib)
