Week Fifty-Eight: Guilty Pleasures - OutKast - "Hey Ya!" - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below

Since I have spent a great deal of time this past year attempting to impress you with my musical selections and memorabilia, this week I am going to introduce you to my guilty pleasures. These are songs that may leave you scratching your head and asking: "She likes whaaaat?!?!?" I just hope you will still be able to respect me in the morning!!! :-D

Also, I will have to pull all band info from Wikipedia because I don't know much about any of these artists, other than the fact that I like these somewhat goofy songs!!!
*****************************************************************

It was my older brother who introduced me to this song. Back when we were both huge fans of shutting the bars down and no one else would go drinking with us because we were such obnoxious drunks, we would throw this tune on while we were getting ready to drown our sorrows and scream about how AA was for quitters!!!

Fortunately, I eventually became one of those quitters, but I will always have a warm spot in my heart for this song...

Before I share with you what Wikipedia has to say about this song overall, I had to pull out and highlight this one amazing fact about Andre 3000:

"André 3000 began work on 'Hey Ya!' in December 2002 at Stankonia Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. He used an acoustic guitar for accompaniment, inspired by bands such as the Ramones, the Buzzcocks and the Smiths."

Seriously, I would have never taken him to be a fan of those bands, but I really do learn the coolest facts from keeping this blog!!!

Now, here's more info about this song:

"'Hey Ya!' is a song written and produced by André 3000 for his 2003 album The Love Below, part of the hip hop duo OutKast's double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. 'Hey Ya!' takes influence from funk and rock music. Its music video features a live performance by a band, all eight of whose members are played by André 3000, that mimicks the Beatles' 1964 performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The song received praise from contemporary music critics, and won for Best Urban/Alternative Performance at the 46th Grammy Awards."

"Along with 'The Way You Move', recorded by OutKast's other member Big Boi, 'Hey Ya!' was released by LaFace Records as one of the album's two lead singles. It became a commercial success, reaching the top five of most of the charts it entered, and topping the Billboard Hot 100 and the ARIA Singles Chart, among others: in 2009, Billboard named it as the 20th highest selling song of the 2000s decade in the United States. The song popularized the phrase 'shake it like a Polaroid picture', and the Polaroid Corporation used the song to revitalize the public's perception of its products."

Of course, I'll also have to take you into the weekend with my other favorite by them called "Roses"...

One two three go!

[Verse One - Andre 3000]

My baby don't mess around me
Because she loves me so
And this I know for sure.
But does she really wanna
But can't stand to see me
Walk out the door...
Don't try to fight the feelin'
Because the thought alone is killing me right now.
Thank God for mom and dad
For sticking to two together
'Cause we don't know how.

[Chorus]
Hey Ya... x8
[Verse Two - Andre 3000]
You think you've got it
Oh, you think you've got it
But got it just don't get it
Til' there's nothing at all.
We stick together
Oh, we stick together
But seperate's always better when there's feelings involved.
If what they say is "nothing is forever"
Then what makes, then what makes, then what makes
then what makes love the exception?
So why-oh-why-oh-why-oh-why-oh-why-oh
Are we so in denial
When you know we're not happy here?

[Chorus]
Hey Ya... x8

[Bridge - Andre 3000]
Hey, alright now,
Alright now, fellas! (Yeah!)
Now what's cooler than bein' cool? (Ice Cold!)
I can't hear ya,
I say what's cooler than bein' cool? (Ice Cold!)

Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright--
Okay, now ladies! (Yeah!)
Now we gonna break this thang down in just a few seconds
Now don't have me break this thing down for nothin'
Now I wanna see y'all on ya baddest behavior!
Lend me some suga', I am your NEIGHBOR!
Ahh, here we go now!

Shake it, shake, shake it,
Shake it, shake, shake it,
Shake it, shake, shake it,
Shake it,
Shake it, shake, shake it,
Shake it like a Polaroid picture.
Hey Ya.

Shake it,
Shake it, shake, shake it,
Shake it, shake, shake it,
Shake it,
Shake it, shake, shake it,
Shake it like a Polaroid picture.

[Chorus]

Hey ya... (continues with fade)
