Week Eighty-Nine: Candy Songs - Siouxsie & the Banshees - "Candyman" - Tinderbox

Week Eighty-Nine will be dedicated to songs that feature that wonderful God-given treat known as candy!!!

@>---<@@>---<@@>---<@@>---<@@>---<@

Again, I know that I have covered quite a bit of the lovely Siouxsie Sioux on my blog already, but she's my all-time fave!

I've pretty much shared all that I have to share about the band, so I'll let Wikipedia fill you in this time around:

"'Candyman' is a song written and produced by British rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees. It was released as the second single from their seventh studio album Tinderbox."

"The song is an aggressive guitar-based number with heavy post-punk influences. Although its title suggests wholesome imagery à la 'The Candy Man', Sioux's lyrics describe an altogether different kind of 'Candyman' (à la Ronald Clark O'Bryan): ('...Sickly sweet, his poison seeks / For the young ones who don't understand / The danger in his hands / With a jaundiced wink see his cunning slink / Oh trust in me my pretty one / Come walk with me my helpless one...')."

"'Candyman' became Siouxsie and the Banshees' 13th top 40 hit, peaking at number 34 in the UK singles chart."

Sickly sweet, his poison seeks
For the young ones who don't understand
The danger in his hands
With a jaundiced wink see his cunning slink
Oh trust in me my pretty one
Come walk with me my helpless one
Candyman

Syrup lies upon your tongue
Gelatine saliva spills
The flash of a guillotine a smile

Candyman - oh candyman

No pity for him, their misery screams
Unspeakable things

A cool missile, yes it's in his smile
With open arms to welcome you
Beware the masked pretender
He always lies, this candyman
Those lips conspire in treachery
To strike in cloak and dagger, see!

Candyman - oh candyman

And all the children, he warns "don't tell,''
Those threats are sold
With their guilt and shame, they think they're to blane

For candyman - oh candyman

Week Eighty-Nine: Candy Songs - The Jesus and Mary Chain - "Some Candy Talking" - 21 Singles

Week Eighty-Nine will be dedicated to songs that feature that wonderful God-given treat known as candy!!!

@>---<@@>---<@@>---<@@>---<@@>---<@

I am fully aware that I just covered The Jesus and Mary Chain not too long ago, but I will never be able to get enough of those lovable Reid brothers...ever!!!

I did find some interesting info about this song on Wikipedia that I will share with you:
"The title track is commonly misunderstood as being about heroin use. In a 2005 interview with Jim Reid (lead singer) featured in Filter Magazine, Reid noted that: 'Some Candy Talking' had nothing to do with drugs, actually. It was just something a radio DJ picked up on, and it was banned in all the major radio stations in the UK. Though that images of poppy flowers are featured in the video for the single, seeming to imply that the song is indeed about heroin. The song was originally banned for this reason by BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike Smith, although it was later voted at no. 9 in that year's John Peel Festive fifty. The song was included in the soundtrack to the 1986 film Modern Girls."

You may remember me mentioning the film, Modern Girls, when I posted about Depeche Mode's song, "But Not Tonight"...

I'm going down to the place tonight
To see if I can get a taste tonight
A taste of something warm and sweet
That shivers your bones and rises to your heat

I'm going down to the place tonight
The damp and hungry place tonight
Should all the stars shine in the sky
They couldn't outshine your sparkling eyes
But it's so hard to be the one
To touch and tease and to do it all for fun
But it's too much for a young heart to take
Cause hearts are the easiest things you could break

And I talk to the filth and I walk to the door
I'm knee deep in myself
But I want to get more of that stuff
Of that stuff

Some candy talking
Talk

And I want
And I want
Some candy talking

Some candy talk
I love the way she's walking
I love the way she's talking
It's just the way she's walking
It's just the way she's talking

And I need
All that stuff
Give me some
Of that stuff
I want your candy. I want your candy.
And I need
Give me some
Of your stuff
Give me some
I want your candy. I want your candy.
I want your candy. I want your candy.
I want stuff

Week Eighty-Nine: Candy Songs - Soviet - "Candy Girl" - We Are Eyes, We Are Builders

Week Eighty-Nine will be dedicated to songs that feature that wonderful God-given treat known as candy!!!

@>---<@@>---<@@>---<@@>---<@@>---<@

I have already mentioned Soviet a time or two on my lovely little blog. You may recall that I discovered this band as a result of attending a Synthpop night that used to be hosted by The Wall, which was a kick-arse club down in Deep Ellum... they also hosted a fantastic Retro night.

At one of the Synthpop events, they handed out promotional copies of We Are Eyes, We Are Builders. I was completely blown away by their song, "Marbleyezed". When I was goofing around on YouTube one day, I saw, in the comments of the previously mentioned song, that an individual requested an upload of "Modern Love", and since that particular song was only available on the promotional copy, I honored his request and uploaded it... I think it has close to 500 views now.

"Candy Girl" is a really sweet (ha!) little tune. I'm uncertain as to whether the YouTube clip I selected is an official video or not, but it is fantastic, nonetheless!!! And in case you missed my upload of "Modern Love", I'll include it below the lyrics...

There's something sweet here next to me; a girl with lips sweeter than candy. When we kiss it's a calorie; anything sweeter and it'd be misery, sweet misery; she tastes like candy. Sha na na na na na....she's my candy girl. Under a sky that feels so large, we collect like dust amongst the stars; you're my star. I'll take my spaceship through these skies to get so close to your distant eyes. I swallow my pride to be at her side. There's something sweet here next to me; a girl with lips more cordial than brandy. When we kiss it's a calorie; anything sweeter and it'd be misery, sweet misery. The orchestra plays for you and me; we walk along to the same old melody.
