Week Sixty-Six: Lollapalooza '93 - Front 242 - "Welcome to Paradise" - Front by Front

This month marks twenty years since my very first Lollapalooza tour which took place on August 1, 1993, at the Starplex Amphitheater in Dallas, TX

I have already mentioned Front 242 a few times on this blog and made a post about them during Spooky Tunes week, but I saved a few of their songs because I knew I would be speaking of them again when I got around to doing Lollapalooza '93 week.

Front 242 gets me so pumped (and also gets me very odd stares when I drive around town with my windows down and their tunes blasting)!!! I could not believe that Front 242 was part of the '93 line-up, but then again, it was such an odd mish-mash of genres that year to even begin with (however, since Perry Farrell was behind the festival, it should honestly be no surprise that he would support such a bizarre mix of bands)!

In addition to "Welcome to Paradise", which people often refer to as the "Hey, poor!" or "No sex until marriage!" song, I am also including "Tragedy For You" and "Masterhit"...

Hey poor, you don't have to be poor anymore
Jesus is here!
In the name of Jesus (Alleluia!)
Feel like your life is going nowhere
Ten seconds... Standby
Jesus is the Son of God
Come in Jesus (Alleluia!)
Oh God I'm a sinner!
I deserve to go to hell (Alleluia!)

NO SEX UNTIL MARRIAGE!

Oh God I'm a sinner, I deserve to go to hell
The bible said you keep him out in the lie
In the name of Jesus
Jesus is the Son of God
In the name of Jesus (Alleluia!)
Hey poor, you don't have to be poor anymore
Jesus is here! (Don't tell the devil)
Hey poor, you don't have to be Jesus!

Week Sixty-Six: Lollapalooza '93 - Dinosaur Jr. - "Start Choppin'"- Where You Been

This month marks twenty years since my very first Lollapalooza tour which took place on August 1, 1993, at the Starplex Amphitheater in Dallas, TX

I've actually seen Dinosaur Jr. twice. The first time, of course, was as one of the main stage bands at Lollapalooza '93. The second time was at Trees in Deep Ellum two days before my 20th birthday, on October 25, 1997. Interestingly enough, my second dorm mate, Jenny, whom I've already mentioned a time or two on this blog, was a huge Dinosaur Jr. fan, and since she knew that they covered "Just Like Heaven" and since she knew it was my all-time favorite song, she bought us tickets for my birthday. When they played "Just Like Heaven", Jenny and I went wild dancing --- we were twirling each other around all over the place. When the song was over, J. Mascis said that he would like to "thank the dancers..." Since I didn't see any strippers in the general direction where he was nodding, which was right at Jenny and at me, I'm assuming that he was talking to us!!! :-D

If you are a Dinosaur Jr. fan, you may or may not know this, but J. Mascis composed the soundtrack for and made an appearance in one of my favorite movies, Gas Food Lodging, starring Ione Skye and Fairuza Balk. You owe it to yourself to watch it if you have never seen it!!!

In addition to posting the videos for "Start Choppin'" and their cover of "Just Like Heaven", I'm also including a few of my other favorites by them --- "Out There" and "Feel the Pain"...

There's no goin' back to that I'm so numb, can't even react Didn't say it's not ok But we aren't dealin' the same way I ain't tellin' you a secret I ain't tellin' you goodbye It's the last thing on my mind Still you won't let things unwind Spinnin' tight around your head Can't you hear a word I've said? I ain't tellin' you a secret I ain't tellin' you goodbye When you call it's just not fair It's the last thing you should share I can't deal, I'll let you know Still I wish you'd let it go I ain't tellin' you a secret I ain't tellin' you goodbye I'm tellin' you for one last time It's not just you, the problem's mine to hide I waited as long as I could If you need it, sure I would, that's fine [Solo]

Well, there's no goin' back to that I'm so numb can't even react Didn't say it's not ok But we aren't dealin' the same way I ain't tellin' you a secret I ain't tellin' you goodbye Goodbye Goodbye Goodbye I'm tellin' you for one last time It's not just you, the problem's mine to hide I waited as long as I could If you need it, sure I would, that's fine I'm takin' away a lot of stuff I'm tellin' you it's rough but not goodbye [Solo]

And here's the trailer for Gas Food Lodging to entice you to watch:

Week Sixty-Five: Pandora Picks - Matt & Kim - "Daylight" - Grand

The songs that I have selected for this week were Pandora suggestions based on my She & Him station...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Again, since Pandora found this band for me, I just don't have a lot to share in regards to the band itself, but Wikipedia can give you some interesting background info:
"Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino both attended Pratt Institute, where they met and began dating. When they first met, neither knew how to play their respective instruments. Matt and Kim wanted to learn their instruments purely for knowledge, having no ambition of creating a band. However, when they began getting a hang of their sound, their friends forced them to perform live. After this first performance, Matt and Kim took off. They played as often as they could, anywhere that would allow them to play. This confined their shows to many basements and other such venues, but it didn't hinder the band's performance and they quickly gained many fans. This inspired the duo to record some of their songs so that their fans could bring the music home. The result was the To/From EP. The band did not slow down and continued to play as often as possible with the release of the EP."
All that I can really add to this is that their videos are very entertaining and cleverly done; so if you ever find that you have some free time on your hands, look them up on YouTube and kill half an hour or so enjoying some good tunes!
We cut the legs off of our pants
Threw our shoes into the ocean
Sit back and wave through the daylight
Sit back and wave through the daylight
Slip and slide on subway grates
These shoes are poor mans ice skates
Fall through like change in the daylight
Fall through like change in the daylight
I miss yellow lines in my roads
Some color on monochrome
Maybe I'll paint them in myself
Maybe I'll paint them in myself
These sidewalks liquid then stone
Building walls and an old pay phone
It rings like all through the daylight
It rings like all through the daylight
And in the daylight we can hitchhike to Maine
I hope that someday I'll see without these frames
And in the daylight I don't pick up my phone
Because in the daylight anywhere feels like home
I have five clocks in my life
And only one has the time right
I'll just unplug it for today
I'll just unplug it for today
Open hydrant rolled down windows
This car might make a good old boat
And float down grand street in daylight
And float down grand street in daylight
And with just half of a sunburn
New yellow lines that I earned
Step back and here comes the night time
Step back and here comes the night time
And in the daylight we can hitchhike to Maine
I hope that someday I'll see without these frames
And in the daylight I don't pick up my phone
Because in the daylight anywhere feels like home
