Post #679: Talking Heads - "Once in a Lifetime" - Remain in Light

So as I was browsing through the memoir section at Half Price Books many, many months ago, I came across a book called Bicycle Diaries by David Byrne.  At first, I just breezed right past it.  Then curiosity got the best of me, and I had to see if it was the same David Byrne from the band, Talking Heads.  Sure enough, it was!

The premise is that he rode a bicycle through all of these major cities while out on tour. He describes what he saw and how bike-friendly (or unfriendly) each city remains.

Interestingly, he sat in on a planning meeting in Dallas when Klyde Warren Park was in the developmental phase, and he even includes a picture in the book, which I will share with you below:

It was not a life-altering book, by any means, but it was a fun read.  Today, in addition to "Once in a Lifetime", I'll also include "Wild, Wild Life" and "(Nothing but) Flowers".  Enjoy!

Until next time...

And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was

Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again in the silent water
Under the rocks, and stones there is water underground

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? Am I wrong?
And you may say yourself, "My God! What have I done?"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again in to the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Look where my hand was
Time isn't holding up
Time isn't after us
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was

Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Once in a lifetime
Letting the days go by
Letting the days go by

Post #678: Morrissey - "Judy is a Punk" - Ramones Cover

So this time last week, I was waiting with nervous anticipation to see if Morrissey was going to make good on his Dallas date.  As you may know, he had already cancelled multiple scheduled performances prior to last Saturday's show at The Majestic Theater.  However, not only did he show up, but he was in completely rare form for this concert --- laughing and joking and (*gasp*) actually appearing to enjoy himself.

You see, my first encounter with Morrissey was back in 1992 when I won tickets to see him at Reunion Arena for the Your Arsenal tour, and I caught him many more times throughout the years as he made his way back to Dallas and Fort Worth.  At most concerts, he was a brooding, little soul, and he seemed pained to even have to be in the same room as us, much less to have to perform for us.

However, 25 years later, at last Saturday's performance, he put on one of the most amazing shows EVER!

I have posted so many times about Morrissey and The Smiths that I'm reduced to sharing his encore number, which is actually a cover of a Ramones song, but you can see how he jokingly ends by saying: "Be good to yourself... be good to your mother... stop Trump... and may all the gods in the world bless you!"

Lastly, I never, ever, ever thought I would be fortunate enough to hear "Jack the Ripper" played live, but he played it... and my heart went all aflutter.  That was well worth the ticket price and the long wait to see my beloved Moz!

I will include the Ramones' version of "Judy is a Punk" [and the lyrics are in that YouTube video as a method of forcing you to listen to the original ;-)], as well as the live version of "Jack the Ripper", and of course, this post would not be complete without a picture of the stage from my seat...Enjoy!!!

Until next time...

Post #677: The Smiths - "Handsome Devil" - Hatful of Hollow

Saw this yesterday and thought it was so perfect that I had to share it with you all:

It also made me think about the lines from "Handsome Devil" that go: "Oh, there's more to life than books, you know/But not much more, not much more..."

I get to see Morrissey on Saturday; so far, he's made good on all of his dates up to this point, and I've got my fingers crossed that he'll make it here, as well!

Hope you all find more time to read; it's truly magical!!

Until next time...

All the streets are crammed with things
Eager to be held
I know what hands are for
And I'd like to help myself
You ask me the time
But I sense something more
And I would like to give
What I think you're asking for
You handsome devil
Oh, you handsome devil
Let me get my hands
On your mammary glands
And let me get your head
On the conjugal bed
I say, I say, I say
I crack the whip
And you skip
But you deserve it
You deserve it, deserve it, deserve it
A boy in the bush
Is worth two in the hand
I think I can help you get through your exams
Oh, you handsome devil
Oh, let me get my hands
On your mammary glands
And let me get your head
On the conjugal bed
I say, I say, I say
I crack the whip
And you skip
But you deserve it
You deserve it, deserve it, deserve it
And when we're in your scholarly room
Who will swallow whom?
When we're in your scholarly room
Who will swallow whom?
You handsome devil
Oh, let me get my hands
On your mammary glands
And let me get your head
On the conjugal bed
I say, I say, I say
There's more to life than books, you know
But not much more
Oh, there's more to life than books, you know
But not much more, not much more
Oh, you handsome devil
Oh, you handsome devil

Post #676: Ritchie Valens - "Come On, Let's Go" - Ritchie Valens (Album)

I'm just checking in... hope everyone is doing well! I recently returned from my trip to San Antonio. It's such a quaint, little city (as long as you remain within close proximity to the river, that is).   I also had an opportunity to see my beloved Psychedelic Furs.  They put on the most amazing performance at the Granada here in Dallas.

But back to today's song... So, if you've been following this blog even a little, you know that, with Spring upon us, this is the time of year that I love to roll down my car windows and blast the oldies!!

Here's a fantastic tune by Ritchie Valens... I'll also include his cover of "We Belong Together".

I must run off now... there's always so much to do and so little time on the weekends to fit it all in...

Until next time...

Well, come on let's go
Let's go, let's go, little darlin'
And tell me that you'll never leave me
Come on, come on, let's go-a
Again, again and again

Well now, swing me, swing me
All the way down there
Come on let's go little darlin'
Let's go, let's go again, once more

Well, I love you so, oh girl
And I'll never let you go
Come on baby, so
Oh pretty baby, I love you so

Let's go, let's go, let's go
Little sweetheart
And then we can always be together
Come on, come on, let's go again

(Ritchie & Rene - guitars & instrumental) 'go on'

I love you so, oh girl
And I'll never let you go
Come on baby, it's so
Oh pretty baby, I-I love you so

Let's go, let's go, let's go, little darlin'
They're dancin' and we belong here
Come on let's go, let's go-a
Again, again and again and again

Again, again and again and again
Again, again and again and again

Fades-

Again, again and again and again
